O You Crazy, Barbaric Parents! (Jan-05-2004)

It is uncomfortable to find an article dealing with what happens in my home country. It was particularly disturbing when I happened to read the egregious - unbelievable, in fact - story of a boom of tongue surgery in Korea this morning.

Tongue surgery per se does not have any strange aspect in it. But if it has become a sort of 'fashion,' and if it has been solely for toddlers, particularly in Korea, there must be something very fishy. Very.

As it turned out, it was even worse than I imagined. The tongue surgeries, which involve snipping the thin tissue under the tongue to make it longer and supposedly nimbler, were rampant among so many toddlers whose parents were so crazy about making their kids' proficient in English that they could do 'anything' however it sounds insance, weird, or even criminal.

It obviously provides another horrible example of how the Korean society tramples their children's human rights in the name of their future. It is sad, heart breaking. Disturbing, indeed.

It seems to me that being born as a Korean in Korea itself is tragic and unfortunate, especially these days. (*)
