LOTR: The Return of the King Jan-04-2004-Sun

LOTR: Lord of the Rings
is definitely our - my wife and myself - favorite movie of all time. We have seen first two installments over and over again. We simply love it. The myth, the story, the setting, the characters. Surely it is a great, if not the greatest, movie.

Went to see the movie for the second time.

For the first time, we watched the 3rd installment of the LOTR two weeks ago. At first, it seemed a bit hectic and poorly organized in terms of narrative. This time, however, the movie looked significantly better, both in narrative and in structure.

The battle scenes were simply breathtaking. Spectacular, stunning, epic.

One of the memorable scenes was when Faramir, with his some 200 soldiers rode back to the Osgiliath to reclaim the place. But it was nothing but suicidal in that Faramir's army was vastly outnumbered. The scene was heart breaking, sad and grim.

"The Return of the King" was not perfect of course, especially in terms of its plot and narrative. The second half of the movie was particularly tedious and redundant. But all in all, the movie was quite good. Among them, the battle scene in the Pelenor Field of Minas Tirith was the best.

There is a few more things I'd like to mention before wrapping up this scribing:

1. Handful of (relatively) unknown actors who performed great.

Bernard Hill for King Theoden of Rohan; Miranda Otto for Eowyn; David Wenham for Faramir; Karl Urban for Eomer.

2. The music. Themes typical for the evil part and the good were so powerful that enhance the impact of the flick significantly.

3. 9-11 and LOTR: I was told that there was increasing popularity for LOTR after 9-11, perhaps resulting from putting some nonsense meanings to the bi-polar, epic battle of this movie (or book). It's quite predictable that the US people think themselves as the good part. ... Well, suit yourself. (*)
